The Experience

We slid our kayaks into the Clyde River just as the light started to soften — you know that hour when everything feels a bit slower? Our guide, Jess, handed me a paddle and grinned, “You’ll want to keep an eye out for pelicans.” The water was calm but not silent; gulls arguing somewhere upstream, and you could smell eucalyptus drifting over from the bank. I kept bumping my paddle against the side at first (coordination’s not my strong suit), but Jess didn’t seem to mind.

About halfway along, we drifted right up to Sam’s Pizzeria — literally paddled up to their deck. I’d never had pizza delivered by kayak before. The staff leaned over with boxes in hand, laughing as they tried not to drop anything. I grabbed a slice (mushrooms and olives — still hot) and tried not to get sauce on my life vest. The gluten-free crust was actually decent, which surprised me. We just floated there for a while eating dinner, watching the last of the sun catch on the water. Someone in another kayak tried to say “thank you” in Italian and got it hilariously wrong; even Sam laughed from the dock.

After that it got quieter — just paddles dipping and little splashes echoing off the banks. Jess pointed out where oyster farmers work during the day, and told us about how this part of Batemans Bay changes with each tide. There was this moment when everything went kind of blue-grey and you could see the first stars coming out above Clyde River National Park. I didn’t expect it to feel so peaceful after all that pizza.
