The experience

The day starts at Yalumba, where you watch coopers at work in the Southern Hemisphere's only fully operational Cooperage before being fitted to an electric bike. The e-bike removes the strain of climbing through vineyard terrain, so the focus stays on the landscape and the stops ahead rather than the effort of pedaling. At 9:30 you leave Yalumba and ride the Barossa Cycle Trail through the vineyards toward Barossa Valley Chocolate Company, where you choose hot chocolate or coffee with cake and sample chocolate sourced from the Daintree, Belgium and beyond.

The route loops back to Artisans of The Barossa for a seated tasting of six wines from their full list, including their Rarities selections. Later, Barossa Cheese Company prepares a tasting plate from their in-house made range, paired with seasonal condiments. These are not quick samples but sit-down tastings where you spend time with each producer's work.

The tour ends at Yalumba Estate with a private tasting led by a Wine Ambassador who introduces you to their Distinguished Sites wines. You choose one wine (valued up to $50) to pair with a local produce picnic for two, then collect a precinct map and guidance on where to settle on the grounds. Pick from several locations, grab a picnic rug and bean bag, and stay as long as you like. Weather permitting you eat outside. Otherwise the private Family Tasting Room is reserved for your group.

Operated by Bike About

Is this one for you? This is a shared tour with a live English-speaking guide, so you ride and taste alongside other travelers rather than alone. The e-bike format suits anyone who wants to cover ground through the vineyards without managing steep climbs on a regular bike, and the fixed stops and guide pacing mean you don't navigate or plan the route yourself.

Top questions

What happens at Yalumba's Cooperage at the start of the tour?

Yalumba's Cooperage is the Southern Hemisphere's only fully operational one, and you watch coopers at work crafting bespoke oak barrels by hand before the ride begins. The barrels are used to age the wines you'll taste later in the day.

How does the e-bike work on this tour?

You're fitted to an electric bike at Yalumba before the 9:30 departure, and ride it along the Barossa Cycle Trail through the vineyards to each stop. The electric assist handles the hills so you can focus on the route and the producers you visit.

What wines do you taste at Artisans of The Barossa?

Artisans of The Barossa offers a seated tasting of six wines from their full list, including selections from their Rarities collection: wines made by newer winemakers who have joined Barossa's established names in the past 20 years.

What's included in the Barossa Cheese Company stop?

Barossa Cheese Company prepares a tasting plate from their in-house made cheese range, paired with seasonal condiments. You sit down for the tasting rather than a quick sample.

How does the picnic lunch at Yalumba work?

A Wine Ambassador leads a private tasting of Yalumba's Distinguished Sites wines, and you choose one (valued up to $50) to drink with a local produce picnic for two. You receive a map of the grounds and can pick from several outdoor locations to eat, with picnic rugs, bean bags and lawn games available if weather permits.
