The Experience

I nearly walked right past the first mural — it’s so bright you’d think it would shout at you, but somehow it just blends into the morning. Our guide, Marije, waved me over with a grin and started telling us about the artist who painted it (I forgot his name, sorry — I was distracted by this wild parrot screeching overhead). That set the tone for San Nicolas: color everywhere, but also these little interruptions that make you look twice.

We started inside ArtisA Gallery, which smells faintly like oil paint and something sweet I couldn’t place. The artists there were actually working in the back room, not just showing off finished pieces. Marije explained how the gallery got started after one of those big street art festivals — apparently, half the town pitched in. I liked that she didn’t rush us; someone asked about a painting of a woman with a cactus crown and she just smiled and let us guess what it meant before explaining. Felt more like a conversation than a lecture.

Walking through San Nicolas on this Aruba mural tour is kind of like flipping through someone’s scrapbook — every wall has its own story or joke (one mural had a goat wearing sunglasses; no explanation given). We ducked into Space21.art for a bit, which was cooler inside — literally, thank goodness for AC — and watched an artist weaving something out of palm fibers. He nodded at us but didn’t stop working.
