The Experience

First thing I noticed was how quiet the water felt near Savaneta. You get this salty breeze right away, mixed with something almost sweet from the mangroves. Our guide—Miguel, who grew up just down the road—helped us into the kayaks, joking about how he still can’t paddle in a straight line after all these years. I laughed but honestly, I zig-zagged for the first ten minutes too. The houses along the coastline are these wild colors—turquoise, coral pink—and then suddenly you’re gliding past Aruba Ocean Villas on your left, which looked like something out of a movie. There was a pelican perched on one of their docks just staring at us. For some reason that sticks with me.

We finished with cold bottled water (which tasted way better than usual after paddling), sitting on our kayaks while Miguel told one last story about his grandmother fishing here as a kid. I still think about that view sometimes—just open sky and this weird sense of calm you only get after saltwater and sun.
