The Experience

I’ll be honest — I almost bailed on the Aruba clear kayak photoshoot because my hair was doing that frizzy island thing and I thought, “No way am I getting in front of a camera today.” But our guide, Luz, just grinned and handed me cold water while she set up the kayaks. She said the wind would make my hair look “alive,” which made me laugh (and also kinda worked). The water was that ridiculous blue you see in postcards, but real. It was early enough that it wasn’t crowded — just us, some pelicans overhead, and Luz giving gentle directions like “look left” or “just breathe.”

The clear kayak felt weirdly sturdy. At first I kept glancing down at my feet through the bottom — you can see everything, even tiny fish darting under you. Luz would show me a pose and then demonstrate herself, which helped since I’m usually awkward in photos. She’d say stuff like “pretend you’re just floating home,” which made me snort-laugh so hard she caught it on video. There was this moment where the sun hit the water just right and for a second it felt like we were inside a glass of Sprite — all bubbles and light. Didn’t expect to feel that relaxed with someone pointing a camera at me.

Afterwards we sat on the sand sipping drinks (they had cold water but also something sweet with lime — not sure what it was). Luz scrolled through some shots on her phone so I could peek before they sent the full album later that day. The whole thing took maybe 20 minutes but honestly, it stuck with me longer than some of my longer tours here. Even now when I see those photos, I remember how good the sun felt on my shoulders and how Luz said everyone looks best when they’re just being themselves. That’s probably true everywhere, but especially here.
