The Experience

“Just run straight — don’t sit down!” That’s what Arman, my pilot, shouted over the wind at Lake Sevan. I was honestly nervous, staring down at my sneakers digging into the grass, but he grinned like it was nothing. The van ride from Yerevan felt long enough for my nerves to kick in (I kept checking if I’d remembered sunscreen), but the view out the window — those wild green hills and patches of yellow flowers — distracted me. The air smelled sharp and cold when we stepped out near the launch spot, higher than I expected. I tried to say “barev dzez” to one of the other pilots; Li laughed and corrected my accent — probably butchered it.

Getting strapped into the harness was a bit awkward (I never know what to do with my arms), but Arman talked me through every buckle and check. He pointed out how we’d be flying above 2000 meters, which sounded both awesome and slightly terrifying. There was this moment before takeoff where everything went quiet except for some distant sheep bells — then suddenly we were running, the ground dropped away, and I just… floated. It didn’t feel like falling at all. More like drifting on invisible water currents. My heart hammered for maybe ten seconds, then settled as I realized I could see forever: blue lake below, little villages tucked into folds of green.

I could hear Arman explaining how thermals work (honestly only half listening — sorry Arman), but mostly I just watched our shadow skimming over the fields. At one point he let me steer for a few seconds; it felt weirdly calming, not scary like I thought it’d be. The GoPro caught me grinning like an idiot. Landing was soft — well, except for my knees wobbling after we touched down. Someone handed me a flight certificate with my name scribbled on it; cheesy maybe, but I still keep it tucked in my journal.
