Step-by-step itinerary
Whale watching on semi-submersible boat
- Arrive at Puerto Piramides embarkation point
- Meet guides and board the submarine
- Sail to whale-watching site
- Watch whales from submerged lower deck windows
- Observe whales from outdoor upper deck
- Return to shore and end tour
The experience
You arrive at the embarkation point in Puerto Piramides and meet your guide, who stays with you for the entire excursion. The semi-submersible boat leaves shore within minutes and heads to the whale-watching site. On the way, the outdoor upper deck gives you views of seabirds and dolphins approaching the boat. If you prefer, you can head down to the submerged lower deck right away to watch the undersea world pass by.
Once at the site, the real work of the boat begins. You move between decks as the whales appear. The lower deck puts you behind 40 panoramic windows where you watch the whales interact with each other in their natural habitat: the windows wrap around so there's a sightline no matter where you stand. When the whales surface and jump, you climb back to the upper deck to see them from above, swimming and breaching. The combination of submerged and surface views is what makes this boat different from a standard tour boat: you're not watching from a distance or guessing what's below the waterline.
After roughly 90 minutes, you head back to shore and the excursion ends at the point where you started. Bring nothing to eat or drink aboard. The boat does not allow food or beverages during the trip.
What’s included
- Professional guide in English or Spanish for the full 1.5-hour excursion.

Top questions
What languages is the guide in?
Live guide in English and Spanish.
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (4 to 12 years); Infant (under 4): free.
Can I stay on the upper deck the whole time, or do I have to go down to the lower deck?
You choose. The upper deck is outdoors and gives you surface views of the whales jumping and swimming. The lower deck is submerged and has 40 windows for watching them underwater. Most people move between both to see the whales from both angles, but you can stay topside if you prefer.
How close do the whales actually get to the boat?
Close enough that you watch them through the 40 windows on the lower deck as they interact with each other. The boat positions itself at the whale-watching site where they naturally congregate, and they swim past the windows during the excursion.
What if I get seasick or feel claustrophobic on the lower deck?
The upper outdoor deck is always available, so you can stay there for the whole trip if you need fresh air and open sky. The lower deck is submerged but not enclosed in a way that traps you. You can move back up whenever you want.
Do I need to arrange my own way to Puerto Piramides, or is there pickup?
You make your own way to the embarkation point in Puerto Piramides. Hotel pickup and drop-off are not included, so plan your transport to the departure location in advance.
