The experience

The day starts at the Carlos Ameghino Isthmus interpretive center, where you learn about the peninsula's flora, fauna and geology before moving to the panoramic lookout over Golfo Nuevo, San Jose and the Island of Birds. From there, the tour moves into Peninsula Valdes itself (a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999), where the road passes through habitat for guanacos, rheas, foxes, maras, armadillos and skunks. The stops change depending on season, weather and tides, but typically include Caleta Valdes, Punta Norte and Punta Cantor, where you watch elephant seals, penguins and sea lions from the shore.

If you choose the whale watching option, you board a boat at Puerto Pirámides with specialized bilingual crew who cut the engines once whales appear, letting the animals approach the boat at their own pace. This navigation runs June through December, when the whales are in the area. The tour wraps at sunset back in Puerto Madryn.

An air-conditioned vehicle carries the group throughout the day. Bilingual guides and a naturalist accompany you, providing detail on the ecosystems and wildlife. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included on the full-day options. If you book whale watching only, you arrange your own arrival at Puerto Pirámides 30 minutes before departure for check-in.
