The experience
The trek starts in forest where you move through the local flora and fauna, then opens into the wide Electric River Valley. The trail crosses the successive frontal moraines (the ridges of rock and debris that mark where glaciers once halted), so you're walking through the physical record of how these mountains were carved. The silence away from the main routes is part of the draw. You're not on the crowded path to Laguna de los Tres Picos.
The payoff is the view of Fitz Roy's north face from one of the closest points you can reach on foot. The massif rises above you in a way that the more trafficked viewpoints don't quite deliver. The whole day, 8 to 10 hours of trekking, is built around that approach and the time to stand in front of it. Your guide handles the route. Private transportation picks you up from your hotel and brings you back.
