The Experience

The day starts with a 4x4 pickup from your hotel in El Calafate, then heads north on Route 40 toward the Santa Cruz River. The drive itself is the first part of the journey—you cross the vast Patagonian landscape that Darwin saw, and the guide uses this time to brief you on what's ahead. Once you reach the river, you get fitted with Gore-Tex dry suits, life jackets, boots, and gloves; the gear matters because the water is cold and the wind can pick up fast.

Then you launch in double kayaks and paddle downstream for approximately 15 km. The geological formations along the banks—striations in the rock, the way the river cuts through the landscape—are what you're here to see, and they stay visible the whole way. Wildlife appears if conditions allow: native birds and guanacos on the banks. The paddle is steady rather than technical; the guide leads and the route is downstream, so the current helps. A moderate level of fitness gets you through it.

The journey ends at Estancia Río Bote, a working ranch by the river where lunch waits. The menu changes by season—beef steak and salads in the warmer months, lentil stew with chorizo in winter—and includes water, juice, and wine. After eating and resting, the 4x4 returns you to your hotel in El Calafate. The whole experience runs about five hours from pickup to drop-off.
