The experience
You arrive at the commercial office for a safety briefing and e-bike adjustment, then transfer to the trailhead near Laguna Esmeralda. The first 1.5 kilometers follow a marked path before you veer onto the Trail of the Axers (the old firewood route from the 1940s) crossing the Emerald River by bridge. From there, the ride opens into panoramic terrain: Carbajal Valley spreads below, Sierra Sorondo rises to one side, and Cerro Bonete anchors the skyline. The e-bike motor handles the climbs so you stay fresh and can absorb the scale of the landscape instead of fighting the pedals.
The final section is a gentle ascent to Beban Waterfall, where the ride stops. You dismount and stand facing the Beban Glacier while the guide pours a hot infusion (tea, mate or coffee), and you have time to photograph and sit with the view. The glacier hangs above the waterfall's drop, and this is the moment the whole route builds toward. After the break, you ride back downhill to kilometer 17 of National Route 3, where a van picks you up. The return journey gives you one last look at Carbajal Valley from a different angle before you reach the office and finish with a sandwich and water.
The e-bike is the tool that makes this work: it covers the distance without leaving you exhausted, so a five-hour outing feels like a half-day adventure rather than a test of endurance. You pedal, but the motor does the heavy work on climbs and into headwind. Children from age 13 can ride, and the guide speaks English, Spanish or French, so language is not a barrier.
