  • Visit natural wonders in Quebrada de las Conchas
  • Visit winery and taste local wines
  • Explore Cafayate town and free time for lunch
  • Return to Salta with stops in Quebrada de las Conchas

The experience

The drive from Salta follows National Route 68 through the Lerma Valley, passing technical stops in Cerrillos, La Merced, El Carril, Coronel Moldes and La Viña before entering Quebrada de las Conchas. This canyon route is the centerpiece: erosion has carved a succession of named formations, Devil's Throat (a deep, closed canyon), the Amphitheater with natural acoustics, La Yesera, Las Ventanas, Los Castillos, the Toad, the Friar, the Obelisk, and you stop at more than 10 of them on both the outbound and return legs.

As the arid landscape gives way to vineyards, the route enters Cafayate, a town of single-storey colonial and baroque houses built in the late 19th century. You visit a local winery and taste the region's wines. While Torrontés is the signature varietal, the area also grows Malbec, Tannat and Cabernet Sauvignon. Two free hours follow in the town center, where you can explore on foot and eat lunch at a restaurant of your choice.

The return to Salta retraces Quebrada de las Conchas along Route 68, stopping at formations missed on the way out. A technical stop in La Viña or Talapampa near Salta gives you a chance to buy snacks or use facilities before arrival.

Is this one for you?The 11 to 12 hour commitment means you leave early and return late, so plan this as your main activity for the day. If you want a shorter outing or need time for other Salta attractions, a half-day option would not fit this route's full canyon and wine experience.
