The experience

You get in the water with a guide who stays alongside you the whole time. The setup is straightforward: gear fits, you wade in, and the guide points out the coral formations and the fish moving through them. The famous rock sits in the bay. You swim out to it, and when you're ready, you jump. It's the moment most people come for, and the guide is there to make sure you're comfortable with it. Between water time, you sit on the boat with a cold drink and catch your breath.

The reef itself is the draw. Vibrant coral and colorful marine life are what you came to see, and the guide shares facts about the ecosystem as you float above it. Swim noodles and life jackets are on hand if you want them. Snorkel vests too. The group stays small enough that the guide can keep an eye on everyone, and the pace is yours: move along the reef at your own speed, linger where the fish are thickest, or head back to the boat when you've had enough.

Bring sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher), a towel, and any snacks you want. The operator provides water, soda, Sprite, Diet Coke and beer but no food. Two hours in and out of the water means you're done by early afternoon, leaving the rest of your day free.
