The experience

The tour starts at the Bazinas, a group of circular pre-Roman tombs scattered across the site, then climbs toward the main entrance through the Arch of Memmius: a massive gate that once guarded the town. From there you move through sanctuaries of the Roman gods, a Christian church with baptisteries, and a network of cisterns that reveal how the settlement managed its water supply. The upper part of the site holds a large water tank with three basins. The lower side opens onto a villa of mosaics where an olive press and baths still stand, the latter later repurposed as a pottery workshop.

After the main ruins, the tour travels about 4 km to the Mausoleum of Quintus Lollius Urbicus, a memorial built for the family of the Roman governor of Britannia. It sits isolated in a field, its inscriptions worn but still legible. You return to the site for a picnic lunch before the day ends.
