The experience
The tour starts with airport pickup and a transfer to your hotel, then a 9 AM hotel pickup to begin the day. Place d'Armes sits at the heart of Oran, linking the old and new city. At its center stands a pyramidal stele erected in 1898 to commemorate the Battle of Sidi Brahim, topped with a bronze Winged Victory statue and a bust of Emir Abdelkader. Surrounding the square are the Town Hall, built in 1886 with two bronze lions sculpted by French artist Auguste Cain, and the Regional Theater, completed in 1908 in Italian Renaissance style and now called the Regional Theater of Oran Abdelkader Alloula.
The Palais du Bey occupies the southeastern edge of what was once Rosalcazar. After the Spanish departure in 1792, Mohamed El Kebir, the Bey of Oran, built this palace with three main sections: the Diwan (council chamber), the Residence, and the Pavilion of the Favorite, where the Bey would rest in a private garden. The interior retained its original Moorish architectural style even after the French colonization, when it served as the residence of the General Commandant of the Oran division. Verdant gardens surrounded the residence, harem, diwan and private baths.
Fort Santa Cruz crowns the Aidour massif and dates to the 16th century, commissioned by Governor D'Alvarez de Bazán y Silva, Marquis of Santa Cruz. It was rebuilt and completed in 1738 under José Vallejo. Nearby, Santa Cruz Chapel is a 19th-century whitewashed church housing a statue of the Virgin Mary. From the hilltop, you see panoramic views of Oran, the coastline and the Mediterranean Sea. The tour concludes with a return to your hotel.
