The experience
The tour starts at Square 1 November, Oran's central plaza, where the Town Hall, Winged Victory statues and Baroque Theater anchor the city's European layer. From there, the guide moves through Bey's Palace, built in 1792 atop Spanish fortifications, and the 1796 Ottoman mosque with its distinctive minaret, a rarity in the region. These stops trace how Oran shifted hands across centuries, each ruler leaving architecture behind.
The Fort of Santa Cruz sits at the top of Mount Murdjadjo, a 16th-century Spanish defensive structure with the Chapel of Our Lady of Salvation beside it. The car takes you up. From the fort, the Mediterranean and the city spread below. The itinerary also includes the Pearl Mosque, built inside the old Spanish town with Spanish inscriptions from 1773 still visible on its walls, and the former bullring: a circular ruin from Oran's colonial past when bullfighting drew crowds. A neo-Moorish building decorated with symbols of three religions, a 1913 library conversion, and the boulevard where Albert Camus wrote and Yves Saint Laurent studied round out the stops.
The tour ends with a two-kilometer harbor promenade overlooking the Mediterranean, palm trees lining the waterfront. A stop at a local market lets you see where Oran's residents shop and eat daily. The guide speaks English, French or Arabic, so you follow the commentary in whichever language works for you. Seven to eight hours means you move through the stops without rushing, with time to photograph and absorb each site.
