The experience

You arrive at Oran airport and are met by your guide and driver, who brief you on the route to your hotel. After settling in, the first day begins with a full city tour: Place d'Armes, the civic heart where the old town meets the new, anchored by a pyramidal stele from 1898 and flanked by the town hall and regional theatre. The APC building, completed in 1886, stands nearby with its pair of bronze lions sculpted by French artist Auguste Cain. The Regional Theater of Oran, built in 1908, displays Italian Renaissance elegance. The Bey's Palace, constructed after the Spanish departure in 1792, retains its Moorish interior: diwan, residence, and the Pavilion of the Favorite arranged around verdant gardens. The Mosque of Sidi Ramdane, built between 1792 and 1796, shows Ottoman influence through its domed square plan and octagonal minaret.

The afternoon takes you to the Cathédrale du Sacré-Cœur, now a public library but still displaying its neo-Byzantine domes and stained-glass windows, then up to Fort Santa Cruz crowning the Aidour massif. Built in the 16th century and reconstructed in 1738, the fort commands views over the city. The Chapel of Santa Cruz, also called Notre-Dame du Salut, holds a statue of the Virgin Mary erected in 1850 after a cholera epidemic. You'll see the Arena, one of Spain's oldest structures in Oran, with a local guide explaining its construction methods. The day ends with a return to your hotel.

Day two departs for Tlemcen in the morning, traveling via country roads or highway depending on weather. The Caves of Beni Add, located 17 kilometers from Tlemcen, stretch over 700 meters with depths reaching 57 meters: limestone walls hold stalactites and stalagmites of varied shapes. Oued El-Ourit, seven kilometers from the city, offers seven natural cascades set in a pine-covered mountainous area. After lunch, you visit the Mansourah ruins, a 13th-14th century military camp that became a city with a mosque, palace, and hospital, now reduced to archaeological remains. The Mechouar, a Zianid royal palace complex from the Middle Ages, exemplifies Moorish and Andalusian architecture. Sidi Boumediene Mosque displays intricate zellige tilework, carved wooden ceilings, and the tomb of a revered Sufi scholar. The tour finishes at Lalla Setti park, where a walk offers sunset views over the city before the return to Oran and your hotel.
