The experience
The Kasbah is a maze of narrow streets stacked on a hillside, and a guide who grew up here knows which ones matter. You'll start at the Place des Martyrs, where the new and old mosques stand, then move through the quarter to the Katchaoua Mosque and the palaces: Aziza Palace and Mustapha Pacha Palace, now a national museum of illumination, miniature and calligraphy. The alleys themselves are the real draw: you pass by the Sidi Abd Rahman mosque, Sidi Ramdhan mosque, and Sidi Mohamed Cherif mosque, and stop to watch craftspeople (carpenters, potters, leather makers) working in their shops the way they have for centuries.
The tour includes a walk through the exact alleys used in Gillo Pontecorvo's 1966 film "The Battle of Algiers," and a visit to the Ali La Pointe Museum, which documents the Algerian revolution. These are the places the film made legendary, and the guide explains what happened there and why it matters. Lunch happens in a traditional house partway through, so you're not rushing between stops on an empty stomach.
You'll need a moderate level of fitness: the Kasbah is built on a slope, the streets are steep, and there's a lot of walking on uneven ground. Wear comfortable shoes and bring water. The guide speaks English, Spanish, French, Arabic or another language depending on your group, and all entrance fees to the palaces and museums are covered in the price.
