The Experience

The guide was supposed to meet us at the hotel at 8:30, but the traffic from the seafront was worse than expected — he arrived at 8:47, apologetic and carrying a small bottle of water. From there we moved into the Kasbah — the old 10th-century city — and the narrow cobbled streets took over. The Ketchaoua Mosque came next, a 17th-century Ottoman building that's one of the most preserved in the lower Casbah. Then Bastion 23 Palace — actually three palaces stacked together facing the sea, with secret rooms and courtyards that made you understand why people fought over this city. We walked past the Mosque of the Fishermen and along the seafront, where the small colored boats and European buildings really do remind you of Marseille, just with a different energy. The downtown section included the Grand Post Office, which is this enormous French-designed Moorish building from the early 1900s, and the Martyrs' Square with its modern yellow mosque. By mid-afternoon, when we reached the Botanical Garden of El Hamma, the walking had added up — but that's the point. You're not seeing Algiers from a bus window. You're moving through it, stopping when something matters, asking questions when you want to.

Lunch was on your own in a restaurant the guide recommended, which meant you could eat at your own pace and actually talk to people around you instead of being herded through a set menu. The final stop was the Monument to the Martyrs, a 92-meter structure on a hill that overlooks the whole city. The views from up there are the kind that make you understand why Algiers matters — you can see the port, the Casbah, the modern city spreading out, all at once. The whole day is mostly walking, so it's not for someone who needs to sit down every twenty minutes, but it's not a forced march either. The guide controls the pace, and there's time to breathe and look around.
