The experience
The tour opens in Algiers with a walking tour through the Casbah's narrow alleys and Ottoman palaces, then moves to the Jardin d'Essai botanical gardens and the Martyrs' Monument for views over the Bay. From there you head to the coast to explore the Roman remains of Caesarea and the Mediterranean-facing ruins of Tipaza before an evening flight south to Djanet.
Two full days in the Sahara follow, based in desert tents. A guide leads 4x4 excursions through Tassili n'Ajjer, where sandstone formations, natural arches, and prehistoric rock art sites span thousands of years of human settlement. The landscape shifts between vast dunes and dramatic canyons. The guide explains the archaeological significance of each stop. After the desert, a late-evening flight takes you to Constantine, where the next two days center on the city's engineering and history: the suspension bridges spanning the Rhumel Gorge, the Cirta Museum's Roman mosaics and sculptures, the hilltop ruins of Tiddis, and the Emir Abdelkader Mosque.
The final stretch moves through Djemila and Timgad, two of North Africa's best-preserved Roman cities. At Djemila you walk temples, forums, and basilicas set into a mountainous landscape. At Timgad, often called the Pompeii of Africa, the original Roman street grid, theatre, Arch of Trajan, and ancient library remain largely intact. A flight to Ghardaïa brings you to the M'Zab Valley, a UNESCO site of fortified ksour and Mozabite architecture, where you explore the old town and local market before returning to Algiers for a final day of museums, the Basilica of Notre-Dame d'Afrique, and the restored Ottoman palace of Dar Ketchaoua. Airport transfer on the last morning completes the journey.
