The experience

You leave Algiers in the early morning and arrive in Cherchell ninety minutes later. The ancient city, once called Caesarea of Mauretania, was one of the most important ports on the North African coast and capital of the Roman province. Your guide walks you through the alleyways and explains what the ruins tell about the city's role as a trading hub and seat of power. Then you move on to Tipaza, where the scale of what remains becomes clear: two large collections of ruins spread across the site, one outside the original walls at the entrance and one in the archaeological park at the western edge of the modern town.

Tipaza is unusual because much of it has never been fully excavated. Large sections of the city explored by archaeologist Stéphane Gsell in 1891 still lie under sediment, so what you see is a partial picture. The monuments that have been cleared stand alongside the outlines of structures still being uncovered. The Royal Mausoleum of Mauritania dominates the landscape: a stone tomb 60 meters in diameter and 32 meters high, ringed by 60 decorated columns with Ionic capitals. It was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1982 and is also known locally as the Christian Tombs or Kabr Al Lumiya (Roman Tombs in Arabic). Your guide explains the monument's history and its significance to both Roman and Islamic heritage.

Lunch is grilled fish, a local specialty, served partway through the day. You'll also have bottled water and tea or coffee included. The tour runs eight hours total, giving you time to move between sites without rushing and to ask your guide (who is a native of Tipaza and speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French or another language) about the details that interest you most.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English, Spanish, French, Italian and Arabic.

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Child (5 to 14 years); Infant (1 to 4 years).

How far is Tipaza from Algiers, and how long does the drive take?

Tipaza is about ninety minutes from Algiers by car. You depart in the early morning and arrive with time to explore before moving on to the other sites on the itinerary.

What exactly is the Royal Mausoleum, and why is it called the Christian Tombs?

The Royal Mausoleum of Mauritania is a massive stone monument 60 meters across and 32 meters tall, built as a royal tomb and ringed by 60 columns with Ionic capitals. The name "Christian Tombs" comes from a translation error. It is also called Kabr Al Lumiya in Arabic, meaning Roman Tombs. It was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1982.

Will I see the entire city of Tipaza, or only parts of it?

Tipaza has two main sections of ruins: one outside the original city walls at the entrance, including a large necropolis and the Sainte-Salsa cathedral, and one in the archaeological park at the western edge of the modern city with most of the excavated monuments. Much of the ancient city still lies under sediment and has not been fully cleared, so you will see what has been unearthed alongside the outlines of structures still being explored.

What is included in the tour, and what should I bring?

The tour includes pickup from your Algiers hotel, a native guide fluent in your language, lunch of grilled fish, and bottled water with tea or coffee. Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring sun protection, as you will spend time walking through open archaeological sites.
