The Experience
"The water is cold, but your body adjusts in about thirty seconds," our guide said as we stood at the edge of the pool beneath Bogovë Waterfall. He wasn't wrong. The forest path to get there takes maybe twenty minutes from the parking area—nothing steep, just enough to feel like you've left the road behind. The waterfall itself sits in a pocket of shade and stone, the kind of place where the air feels different. You swim here first, get used to the temperature, and let your muscles remember what cold water feels like.
Then comes Osumi Canyon. The full swim through it is 3.8 kilometers, which sounds longer than it feels because you're not walking the whole way—you're floating sections of it, swimming through others, wading where the water shallows out. The canyon walls rise up around you, and there's something about being inside a canyon instead of looking down at one from above. You move at whatever pace works. If you want to stop and float and just look, you stop. If you want to try a cliff jump at one of the safe spots, the guide will show you where. The whole thing takes a few hours, and by the time you're done, you've seen the canyon from the inside in a way most people don't bother to.
The tour comes in two versions: Full Tour includes pickup from Berat and runs the whole day—waterfall first, then canyon. Canyon Only means you meet at the Flow Albania base camp near Corovode and skip the waterfall leg if you're short on time. Either way, lunch is included, and so is all the gear: helmet, life jacket, water shoes, neoprene suit if it's cold. The guide is local, which matters more than it sounds. He knows where the water is safest, where the current picks up, which spots are worth lingering in. Small groups keep things manageable, and the pace is relaxed enough that you're not racing through it.
You do need moderate fitness—there's wading, some climbing over rocks, and the cold water itself takes effort—but it's not a gym class. Not recommended if you have spinal injuries, are pregnant, or have cardiovascular issues that would make sustained cold-water activity risky. If you're healthy and can swim, you'll be fine. Book the Full Tour if you want the waterfall included and don't want to arrange your own transport from Berat; go Canyon Only if you're already in the area or prefer to drive yourself to the meeting point.

How cold is the water in Osumi Canyon?
Cold enough that a neoprene suit is included in winter and recommended in shoulder seasons. Your body adjusts quickly once you're moving, but it's not warm-water swimming.
Can I do just the waterfall or just the canyon?
Yes. The Full Tour includes both Bogovë Waterfall and the canyon. The Canyon Only option skips the waterfall and starts at the Flow Albania base camp.
How long does the whole day take?
The Full Tour with pickup from Berat runs most of the day. The Canyon Only portion takes a few hours depending on pace and how long you spend at each stop.
Is cliff jumping required?
No. Cliff jumps are optional and only at designated safe spots. Your guide will show you where they are, but you don't have to do them.
What fitness level do I need?
Moderate. You'll wade, swim, and climb over rocks, but the pace is relaxed. Not suitable for people with spinal injuries, pregnancy, or serious cardiovascular conditions.
Do I need to know how to swim?
Yes, you should be a comfortable swimmer. You're floating and swimming through a canyon, not being towed.
What's included in the price?
Professional local guide, safety briefing, all gear (helmet, life jacket, water shoes, neoprene suit), entry fees, and lunch. The Full Tour also includes transport from Berat.
What if I don't have my own transport to the canyon?
Book the Full Tour, which includes pickup from Berat. If you need transport from elsewhere, ask about options when you book.
