The experience
The day starts with pickup from your Livingstone hotel between 08:00 and 08:30 AM, followed by a drive to the rafting base where you'll meet your guide, get fitted with safety gear, and receive a full briefing before heading down. The hike into the Batoka Gorge is steep but short. Once you reach the water's edge, you're paddling into some of Africa's most intense whitewater. The Zambezi flows warm and powerful year-round, and the gorge walls rise dramatically around you as you work through rapid after rapid (Stairway to Heaven, Washing Machine, Oblivion) each one demanding focus and timing from every paddler in the boat.
You'll get breaks on the calmer stretches to catch your breath and absorb the scale of the gorge, and a light lunch is served mid-way through the trip on the riverbank. The final rapids come after lunch, and once you've run them, the work shifts to the hike back up and out of the gorge: a physically demanding climb that most paddlers feel in their legs. Cold drinks and transport back to your hotel wait at the top. You'll return to Livingstone in the late afternoon.
HSM Adventures operates and guides its own trips rather than outsourcing, so your guides are local, experienced, and backed by SES emergency support and international adventure insurance. The combination of Grade 3–5 rapids, the gorge's raw beauty, and the river's power makes this one of the world's most serious one-day rafting trips, not a scenic float, but a full-body, full-attention paddle.

Top questions
What are the most famous rapids I'll paddle on the Zambezi?
Stairway to Heaven, Washing Machine, and Oblivion are among the named rapids you'll navigate during the 30–32 km run through the Batoka Gorge. Each one is Grade 3–5 whitewater and demands active paddling from the whole crew.
Do I need to be an experienced rafter to do this?
No, but you do need a moderate level of fitness and comfort in water. The minimum age is 15, and non-swimmers are welcome as long as you let the team know beforehand. High-water season (February to July) suits beginners with less technical but fast-paced rapids. Low-water season (August to January) is more challenging and better for experienced paddlers.
What's included in the full-day price?
Hotel pickup and drop-off in Livingstone, all safety gear (helmet and life jacket), professional guide, light snacks, a full lunch, and unlimited water and soft drinks are included. You bring swimwear, water shoes, sunscreen and a change of clothes.
How long is the hike down to the river and back up?
The hike into the Batoka Gorge is steep but short. The hike back out after rafting is longer and more physically demanding. The full day, including transport, briefing, hiking, paddling and the return drive to your hotel, runs about nine hours from pickup to drop-off.
What should I know about the water temperature and conditions?
The Zambezi's water is warm year-round, so you won't be cold. The river's flow and power vary by season: high-water season brings faster, less technical rapids suitable for building skills, while low-water season exposes more rocks and creates more complex lines for experienced paddlers.
