Step-by-step itinerary
Visit Victoria Falls Zimbabwean side
- Arrive at Victoria Falls
- View largest waterfall from Zimbabwe side
- Explore viewpoints along the falls
- Experience spray and roar of falls
The experience
If you have a free afternoon or are visiting Victoria Falls for the first time, the Zimbabwean side gives you the fuller view of the falls' scale. The water cascades with such force that spray rises so high it can be seen from 50 kilometres away: a phenomenon the local name Mosi-oa-Tunya, "the smoke that thunders," captures exactly. You'll walk a series of viewpoints along the cliff edge, each one framing a different angle of the water plunging into the gorge and the forest clinging to the rock face below.
An air-conditioned vehicle picks you up from your hotel and handles parking, so you step straight into the falls without logistical friction. Your guide speaks one of five languages and walks the route with you, explaining what you're seeing as the roar of the water fills the air. The tour spans three to four hours, which gives you time to move between the main viewpoints without rushing through them.
The Zambian side, across the border, shows only 25% of the falls and offers a shorter, different experience. The Zimbabwean side is built around seeing the full scale and power of the cascade from multiple angles. Infants can sit on an adult's lap, and the terrain is accessible for all fitness levels, though you will be walking on paths with views into the gorge.
