The experience
The hike starts at a bistro café in Pontneddfechan village, where you can grab breakfast before setting out. Your guide is a fully qualified mountain leader who has spent decades walking these valleys and knows the industrial heritage, natural environments and local stories of the area. The 15km route is circular, which means you end where you began, and it climbs 400m over terrain that is often rough and muddy: the kind of ground that demands attention but rewards it with views most casual visitors never reach.
Six main waterfalls are the spine of the day, along with smaller falls and cascades that appear as you move through the Waterfalls area. The path itself sees only a handful of walkers most days, and midweek you'll have long stretches to yourself. At several points you get the chance to walk behind the water itself, not just look at it from a distance. The final pool is deep enough for a swim if you want to finish the hike that way.
The ascent and the rough ground mean this is not a stroll (most people feel tired by the end), but it is doable for anyone with moderate fitness and no cardiovascular concerns. The 6-hour duration includes the walking, the stops at each waterfall, and time to take in the landscape. Bring water and snacks. Lunch is not provided.
What’s included

Is this one for you? This is a shared guided hike with a qualified mountain leader, not a private tour, so you'll be walking with other hikers on the same route. It suits anyone with moderate fitness who wants the knowledge and company of an experienced guide and does not mind rough, muddy ground and a full day of walking. It is not suitable for people with poor cardiovascular health or those who prefer easier terrain.
