The Experience

There’s this one stretch outside Sapa where the road narrows and you can smell the earth—sort of damp, like old tea leaves. Our guide, Minh, handed me a helmet that was honestly too big but I just grinned and went with it. We started early, weaving past O Quy Ho village. The air was sharp up there—almost cold—and the valley opened up below us in these wild shades of green. Minh pointed out Fansipan in the distance, half-covered by clouds. I tried to take a photo but my hands were shaking from the ride or maybe just nerves.

We stopped at Ban Khoang to visit a Hmong family. Their house smelled like wood smoke and something sweet simmering on the stove. The grandmother offered us tea—I think it was green tea from their own plants—and Minh translated her stories about planting rice “by the moon.” I probably looked lost half the time but she laughed anyway. After that we rode through Ta Giang Phinh and Phin Ho—tiny villages tucked under Ngu Chi Son mountain. There weren’t any other tourists around, just kids waving from doorways and chickens darting across the path.

Lunch was in Ta Phin village with a Red Dao family. They served something with pork and wild herbs; I still think about that flavor sometimes when I’m back home. The afternoon light made everything look soft—rice terraces, old wooden houses, even our muddy boots. On the way back through Ma Tra village, Minh slowed down so we could watch farmers working in silence except for their quiet singing (I couldn’t catch the words). We got back to Sapa by late afternoon, wind-burned and tired but kind of wishing it wasn’t over yet.
