The Experience
I’ll be honest — I almost bailed when I saw the motorbikes lined up outside the office in Phu Quoc. I mean, traffic here is its own language. But our guide, Minh, just grinned and handed me a helmet that still smelled faintly of someone else’s shampoo (not bad actually). He promised we’d take it slow at first. The first ten minutes were wobbly — my left turn was more of a suggestion than an action — but then something clicked and suddenly we were weaving past pepper farms with the morning sun warm on my arms. Minh stopped to show us how the peppercorns grow in these tall green columns. He snapped one open for us to smell — spicy and earthy, nothing like what comes out of those plastic grinders back home.
After that we kept heading north, dust in our teeth and hair, until we hit Ganh Dau Cape. You can actually see Cambodia from there if you squint past the haze. Minh told us about border stories from his childhood — some funny, some not so much. There was a breeze off the water that felt like a small relief after all that sun. Then it was into the forest, which honestly felt like stepping into another world: suddenly quiet except for birds and our engines cooling down. We ditched the bikes for a bit and walked under this thick green canopy where everything smelled damp and alive. At one point Minh asked if I wanted to try driving on the dirt trail myself (I did, badly — he laughed but didn’t judge).
By noon we’d made it to Starfish Beach. If you come between December and May you’ll see them everywhere — bright red stars scattered in clear water so shallow it barely covers your ankles. We swam a little (the sand gets everywhere) before riding over to Rach Vem village where lunch was waiting at a floating restaurant bobbing gently on blue-green water. The fish was fresh enough that I swear it blinked at me (kidding… mostly). Eating with sea air in your face just makes rice taste better somehow.
