Climb to a mountain pagoda, then drift through limestone caves and 10th-century ruins in a single day.

A full-day guided tour of Ninh Binh covers three landmarks: Mua cave with its 500-step climb to a hilltop pagoda and countryside views; a boat ride through the Trang An Eco-tourism Complex's 48 grottoes and cave system; and Hoa Lu, Vietnam's ancient capital from the 10th century. The tour includes hotel pickup, an English-speaking guide, lunch at a local restaurant, and all entry tickets. It runs from morning pickup through late afternoon return.

The experience

You start at your hotel in the morning and drive to Mua cave, a small site that opens onto views of Tam Coc's three grottoes across the valley. The main draw is the 500 stone steps climbing the mountainside to a pagoda at the summit, where the view stretches across the Ngo Dong river and the countryside beyond. The climb takes focus but rewards you with a perspective most visitors to the region don't reach.

From there, you board a small boat for a three-hour drift through the Trang An cave system. The route winds through Ba Giot, Dia Linh, Toi, and Sang caves: 48 grottoes total scattered across 20 kilometers of the complex. The boat moves slowly enough to take in the limestone formations and the way the water reflects off the rock walls. Lunch follows at a local restaurant, with vegetarian options available.

The afternoon takes you to Hoa Lu, the ancient capital built over 1,000 years ago during the Dinh and Le dynasties. It served as the seat of power for just 41 years (968–1009), but the site holds 47 historical relics. You'll see the wood and stone carvings that decorated the old structures: depictions of daily life, spiritual wishes, and scenes of peace. The tour ends with a drive back to your hotel by late afternoon.

What is the 500-step climb at Mua cave actually like?

Mua cave's stone steps lead upward through a small grove of trees to a pagoda at the mountain's top. The climb is steady but manageable, and the payoff is a view across the entire Ngo Dong river valley and the three grottoes of Tam Coc visible in the distance: the same caves the boat tour passes through later in the day.

How much time do you spend on the boat in Trang An?

The boat ride through Trang An's grottoes runs for three hours. You drift through four named caves (Ba Giot, Dia Linh, Toi, and Sang) as part of the larger 48-grotto system, moving slowly enough to see the limestone formations and water reflections.

What can you actually see at Hoa Lu?

Hoa Lu holds 47 historical relics from Vietnam's 10th-century capital, including wood and stone carvings that decorated the ancient structures. The carvings depict scenes of daily life, spiritual wishes, and peaceful imagery from the time the site served as the seat of power.

Does the tour include lunch, and what are the options?

Lunch at a local restaurant is included in the price and falls between the boat ride and the Hoa Lu visit. Vegetarian meals are available upon request.

What time does pickup happen and when do you return?

Hotel pickup starts between 8:30 and 9:00 in the morning, and the tour returns you to your hotel by 5:00 p.m. The guide and driver collect you from your accommodation at the start.
