The Experience

“You’ll never forget the taste of salt on your lips,” our guide Tam grinned as we pulled up to Hon Mun Island. He was right — I still taste it when I think back. The boat ride out from Nha Trang was louder than I expected (engine plus laughter), but the city faded quick. By the time we reached the first snorkeling spot, my nerves had mostly settled — though I did fumble with my mask and Tam had to help me adjust it, which he did without making me feel silly.

The water was warm, almost silky, and clearer than any pool I’ve ever swum in. Fish darted everywhere — electric blue flashes, yellow stripes, some little ones that looked like they were staring straight at me. It’s hard not to float there forever, just listening to your own breath through the snorkel and the muffled splash of fins nearby. I remember someone (maybe Linh?) laughing underwater — you could hear it in the bubbles.

Lunch was set up right on the boat after we dried off a bit. Grilled seafood, smoky and sweet, with fruit that tasted like sunshine (I know that sounds cheesy). There was coffee too — strong enough to jolt you awake if you’d drifted off in the sun. The guides kept checking if anyone needed veggie options or more water, which honestly felt thoughtful instead of routine.

I didn’t expect to feel so relaxed by the end. Maybe it’s something about being surrounded by sea air and people who don’t mind if you butcher a few Vietnamese words (Tam just laughed when I tried). If you’re thinking about a day trip from Nha Trang for snorkeling but worry about crowds or logistics — this felt easy. And real.
