Boat through a working river, then walk where locals live and eat what they grow

A five-hour boat and walking tour on the Mekong River near Can Tho takes you to a floating fish farm run by a local family, across a green islet where villagers live and farm, through a tropical fruit garden where you pick your own, and ends with hotpot dinner cooked by your host family. Pickup is available from several central hotels. A live English-speaking guide leads the whole day.

The experience

The boat leaves from your hotel and heads onto the Mekong, stopping first at a floating fish farm where a local family shows you how they raise fish and make their living from the river. While you're there, you get a fish foot massage: a real local practice, not a tourist add-on. Then you walk off the boat and into the islet itself, moving through the village with residents to see how they live day to day, tending fish ponds and fruit trees that feed both their families and the local market.

A tropical fruit garden comes next, and here you learn how locals cultivate and harvest what grows there, then pick some of your own to take with you. The tour wraps with dinner: a host family prepares hotpot soup made from local fish, vegetables and herbs, eaten together as the light fades. Coffee or tea comes with the meal.
