The Experience

Someone hands me a cold bottle of water just as we pull up near Ba Ria Central Market—turns out our driver knows when the heat sneaks up on you. Our local guide hops in, waving like we’re old friends, and starts talking about the cashew trees outside. I’d never seen how cashews grow before; he actually picks one off a branch to show us. The smell in the market is sweet and sharp—dried fish, fruit, something fried. We stretch our legs and then head for the Phuoc Long Tunnels. Crawling through that dim space, hearing stories about what it was like for the Viet Cong (I bumped my head once—nobody saw), I felt this odd mix of claustrophobia and awe. It’s only 1.4km but feels like another world down there.

Nui Dat is quieter than I expected. There’s this little breeze moving through the grass around SAS Hill, and our guide pulls out faded photos from his bag—faces of young soldiers who were here decades ago. He points out where Luscombe Airfield used to buzz with helicopters (now it’s just a dusty patch next to a kindergarten built by Australian veterans). The kids waved at us from inside, giggling when I tried to say “xin chào.” Horseshoe Hill is off-limits because of old landmines; we just glimpse it from the road while he explains why nobody goes closer. I can’t shake that feeling—how normal everything looks now, but how much happened here.

The Long Tan Cross feels heavier than I thought it would. Our guide lights incense and hands us flowers for a small ceremony—no big speeches or anything dramatic, just a quiet moment for everyone lost here. The air smells faintly of smoke and wet earth after last night’s rain. Then suddenly we’re back in sunlight, driving toward Vung Tau with the sea glinting ahead. Lunch comes with salty wind and plates piled high—I asked for vegetarian and they didn’t even blink.

After eating we climb up to the lighthouse (so many stairs; my legs still remember) for a view over Vung Tau city and the East Sea that honestly made me stop talking for a minute. There’s Bao Dai’s White Palace too—faded grandeur, peeling paint, but somehow elegant still. Before heading back to Ho Chi Minh City we snap a photo at the Jesus statue on the hill; our guide jokes that he’s taller than Rio’s Christ if you count the base (“but don’t tell Brazilians”). He scribbles some food tips on my map before we say goodbye—I still have that scrap of paper somewhere in my backpack.
