The Experience
The air felt warm and a bit salty as we waited for the shuttle at our Cat Ba hotel—just enough breeze to ruffle my shirt. The bus ride to Cai Beo Wharf was quick, maybe 15 minutes tops, but I caught glimpses of fishermen mending nets along the roadside. Once we reached the pier, there was this faint smell of seaweed and diesel from the boats bobbing nearby. Boarding the transfer boat was easy; staff helped us with bags and even joked about the “VIP” treatment.
We switched over to the main cruise ship—a real beauty, all polished wood and big windows. Our guide, Linh, handed out towels and pointed out little islands as we glided into Lan Ha Bay. Kayaking here in late afternoon light is something else: the water’s glassy, almost greenish-blue, and you can hear nothing but your own paddle dipping in. I spotted tiny crabs scuttling on rocks near the shore while Linh explained how these limestone karsts have stood for millions of years.
After paddling around for a bit (don’t worry if you’re new to kayaking—Linh gave us a quick demo), we got back on board for a tea party. There were plates of fresh mango and dragonfruit, plus some sweet pastries that went fast. We cruised past Monkey Island next—couldn’t miss it with all the chattering monkeys darting around. Some folks swam off the beach while others just watched the sun start to dip behind those jagged cliffs. The colors turned soft pink and orange; honestly, my phone photos don’t do it justice.
By early evening, everyone gathered on deck for what they called a “Sunset Party.” It felt relaxed—people chatting over fruit plates, kids laughing as they tried to spot fishing boats heading home. You could see floating houses in the distance and hear faint music drifting from one of them. The crew checked in often to make sure everyone had what they needed (extra towels or drinks). When it was time to head back, I felt like I’d squeezed every drop out of that golden hour.
