The experience
The driver picks you up at your Hue hotel and takes the road toward Hoi An, stopping at five sites most travelers miss on a straight drive. The first is Thanh Toan covered bridge, built in 1776 as both a crossing and a house: locals set up an altar inside to honor Ms. Tran Thi Dao, a Le dynasty official's wife who funded it. You'll walk through the early morning market in Thanh Toan village, a working rural market unlike the tourist-filled Dong Ba market in Hue city center.
The next stop is the City of Ghosts in An Bang village, a 3-kilometer stretch of cemetery along Thuan An beach. The graves are painted in bright colors and built on white sand. Many are luxury structures costing tens of thousands of dollars, some built in advance by families whose relatives still live overseas. After that, you drive to Truong Ha Bridge for a panoramic view of Tam Giang Lagoon, the largest in Southeast Asia at 22,000 hectares, where the Perfume River, O Lau River and Bo River converge before reaching the sea. Traditional craft villages line the banks, and mangrove forests frame the water.
Hai Van Pass comes next: the old border between the Dai Nam kingdom in the north and the Champa Kingdom in the south, now the division between Hue and Da Nang. From the top you see both cities spread out below. The final stop is the Marble Mountains, five peaks of marble and limestone representing the five elements, with Buddha sculptures carved into caves: some eroded by time, some shaped by local artisans. Your driver delivers you to your Hoi An hotel at the end of the day, having checked the vehicle to make sure nothing was left behind.
