experience

What’s the experience like?

Ever wondered what it feels like to ride a motorbike through Vietnam’s backbone? I didn’t know what to expect when Mister T picked me up in Hue — just that everyone kept talking about the Hai Van Pass. The morning was sticky but not too hot, and we zipped out of town so quickly that I barely had time to second-guess my helmet hair. First stop: Thanh Toan Bridge. It’s this old wooden thing with curved tiles and carvings — honestly, I almost missed the details because a woman nearby was selling tiny bananas and called out something friendly (I think) as we passed. Our guide laughed at my attempt to say “cảm ơn.” Probably butchered it.

The road after that felt like a string of surprises. We cruised past rice fields where farmers in those conical hats waved — or maybe they were shooing birds? Hard to tell from the back of a bike. At Tam Giang Lagoon, we got off for a bit; the air smelled briny and sweet at once, and some local guys showed us how they cast their nets. My hands still smelled faintly of fish after trying it myself (not very well). Lunch was on Lăng Cô Beach — simple grilled fish, sticky rice, some pickled veggies — nothing fancy but somehow perfect with sand between my toes.

The Hai Van Pass itself is… well, you have to see it. The curves are sharp enough that I gripped tighter than I’d admit, but then you get these wide-open views where mountains just drop into blue sea. Mister T pointed out old French bunkers at the top — he told stories about storms rolling in so fast you can’t see your own hands. We stopped for coffee there (Vietnamese style: strong, sweet), and I just sat quietly for a minute watching clouds move over Da Nang below. That silence stuck with me more than any photo could.

Last stop was Linh Ứng Pagoda near Da Nang — tall white statue looking out over everything. There were monks chanting somewhere behind us; it felt peaceful even with other visitors around. After all that wind and sun and noise from the road, standing there felt almost unreal… or maybe I was just tired in a good way.
