The experience

The tour starts with pickup at Phu My Port between 8:00 and 8:30 AM, then a short drive into the city center. Your guide takes you first to Nguyen Hue and Le Loi streets, where you stand in front of City Hall and the Opera House and watch the daily rhythm of local life. From there you move to Saigon Notre-Dame Cathedral, built in 1880 with materials imported from France. The two bell towers are 58 meters high and the cathedral was declared a Basilica by the Pope in 1962. Next is the Saigon Central Post Office, completed in 1891, where you can see the arched windows and ornate interior of this working post office and send postcards if you want.

After the colonial landmarks comes the Reunification Palace, also called Independence Palace, where the end of the Vietnam War was decided. You walk through rooms with original furniture and descend into the basement to see control rooms and other spaces. Lunch follows at a local restaurant with Vietnamese dishes, then at 1:30 PM you head to the War Remnants Museum. The museum documents Vietnam's wars, with particular focus on the conflict with the Americans. Outside the building stand tanks and jets used during the war. By 2:30 PM you arrive at Ben Thanh Market, the largest market in the city, where you have an hour to shop for clothes, jewelry, souvenirs, Vietnamese coffee and other goods, bargaining is expected. The drive back to Phu My Port takes about an hour and a half, getting you there well before the ship departs.

The tour runs 6 to 7 hours total and travels in a private car or van with air conditioning, sized to your group. Your guide speaks English throughout and can accommodate dietary restrictions like vegetarian, vegan or gluten-free meals if you note them when booking. Children from age 4 are welcome, and infants can sit on an adult's lap.
