The Experience

The first thing I noticed was how quiet the street felt when our guide, Minh, waved us over outside our hotel in the Old Quarter. He smiled—nervous, maybe, or just excited—and we squeezed into a taxi together toward the Ho Chi Minh Museum. The ride itself was its own little adventure (I swear there are more scooters than people in Hanoi). Inside the museum, Minh pointed out old black-and-white photos of Ho Chi Minh and told us stories his grandfather remembered. There was this faint smell of incense somewhere that made me pause for a second—I guess I didn’t expect to feel so much standing in front of a glass case.

We walked across Ba Dinh Square to the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum next. It’s hard to explain how solemn it feels there—people move slowly, almost whispering. Minh explained why everyone dresses respectfully (no shorts above the knee), and I actually felt weirdly proud I’d remembered to wear long pants. After that, we had the option to try making tire sandals at this tiny workshop called Tire Sandal King. I tried hammering one together; Li laughed when I tried to say “dép lốp” in Vietnamese—probably butchered it completely. The rubber smelled like rain on asphalt.

Later we headed for Hoa Lo Prison—the “Hanoi Hilton,” which is a strange nickname once you see what’s inside. The walls are thick and cold; you can still hear echoes from school groups passing through. The exhibits focus mostly on Vietnam’s fight against France, but there’s plenty about American POWs too. We ended near Huu Tiep Lake where part of a B-52 bomber still sits half-sunk in green water, just behind someone’s house. It’s surreal—kids playing nearby like it’s nothing special. That image stuck with me more than anything else.
