This full-day tour from Hanoi visits three sites in Ninh Binh province: Bai Dinh Pagoda, where 500 stone statues surround a 100-ton bronze Buddha; a 2.5-hour boat trip through the limestone cave system of Trang An, a UNESCO World Heritage site; and Mua Cave, a 500-step climb to the summit of Lying Dragon Mountain. The tour includes hotel pickup in the Old Quarter, lunch with local dishes, entrance fees, and an English-speaking guide. You choose at checkout whether to include the Mua Cave climb or return to Hanoi after the boat trip.

The Experience

The day starts with pickup at your hotel in the Old Quarter between 7:20 and 8:00 am, then a drive south to Ninh Binh province. After a short break on the expressway, you arrive at Bai Dinh Pagoda around 10:30. The pagoda holds several records: 500 stone Arhat statues, a 36-ton bronze bell, and the 100-ton bronze Buddha statue—the largest in Vietnam. You walk through the complex and take an electric car for the round-trip transfer within the grounds. Lunch follows at a local restaurant with goat meat, fish, chicken and fried rice; vegetarian options are always available in the buffet.

In the afternoon, you board a boat for a 2.5-hour trip through Trang An Ecotourism, a UNESCO World Heritage site recognized in 2014. The limestone mountain system creates a landscape of caves, natural tunnels and surrounding lakes—the same location where the 2016 Kong: Skull Island film was shot. The boat winds through the cave passages and valleys, moving at a pace that lets you take in the geology and the water reflections. At 4:00 pm you return to the bus for the drive back to Hanoi, arriving around 6:00 pm.

If you book the three-site option, you stay on for Mua Cave instead. The climb is nearly 500 steps to the summit of Lying Dragon Mountain, where you get a panoramic view of the Tam Coc valley and rice fields below. The hike takes time but the vantage point is the reason people choose it. You return to Hanoi around 7:00 pm. The itinerary can shift depending on traffic, weather or other factors, but the operator ensures all sites on your chosen program are visited.

Is this one for you?Choose the two-site option if you want the pagoda and the boat trip without the physical demand of climbing; the three-site option with Mua Cave is for travelers who want the summit views and don't mind the 500 steps. Either way, the guide and the fixed schedule mean you don't arrange transport between sites or figure out which caves to see—the day is built for you.

Top questions

What's the 100-ton bronze Buddha at Bai Dinh Pagoda actually like when you get there?

Bai Dinh Pagoda holds the largest bronze Buddha statue in Vietnam at 100 tons, set within a complex of 500 stone Arhat statues and a 36-ton bronze bell. You walk through the grounds and take an electric car for transport within the pagoda area, so you see the scale of the statues and the bell without doing all the walking yourself.

How long is the boat trip through Trang An, and what do you actually see?

The Trang An boat trip lasts 2.5 hours and winds through a limestone cave system with natural tunnels, mountains and surrounding lakes. Trang An is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the landscape of caves and water reflections is what makes the trip the centerpiece of the afternoon.

Is the Mua Cave climb hard, and what's at the top?

Mua Cave involves climbing nearly 500 steps to reach the summit of Lying Dragon Mountain. At the top you get a panoramic view of the Tam Coc valley and rice fields. The climb takes effort but the vantage point is what people book this option for.

What's included in the lunch, and are vegetarian meals available?

Lunch is a buffet with local dishes including goat meat, fish, chicken and fried rice. Vegetarian options are always available, and you can request specific dietary needs when you book or the day before departure.

Do I need to arrange my own transport to the hotel, or is pickup included?

Hotel pickup and drop-off in the Old Quarter are included in the tour price. The operator will contact you with the scheduled pickup time; wait at your hotel lobby before that time. If you stay outside the Old Quarter, there is an extra charge or you can meet at a designated meeting point.

How long is the whole tour, and what time do I get back to Hanoi?

The tour is 12 hours total. If you choose the two-site option (Bai Dinh and Trang An only), you return to Hanoi around 6:00 pm. If you add Mua Cave, you arrive back around 7:00 pm. Actual return times may vary depending on traffic and weather.
