The Experience
We got picked up right outside our little hotel in the Hanoi Old Quarter—still half-awake, honestly. The driver didn’t speak much English but nodded and smiled, which was enough. The city was just waking up as we left, scooters everywhere and a bit of that morning mist clinging to the air. It’s a long-ish drive to Tuan Chau Harbor (maybe three hours?), but I barely noticed because I ended up chatting with a woman from Melbourne about Vietnamese coffee and how it’s both amazing and dangerous for sleep.
Stepping onto the boat felt like stepping into another world—there’s this salty breeze and everything slows down. Our guide, Minh, gave us a quick safety talk (I zoned out halfway through—sorry Minh) and then pointed out these limestone cliffs that look like something out of an old painting. Lunch came early: plates of fish with ginger, some kind of sweet-sour sauce I can’t pronounce (Li laughed when I tried to say it in Vietnamese), plus rice and crunchy greens. I still think about that ginger smell mixed with the sea air.
After lunch we paddled kayaks around the bay—my arms are not made for kayaking but Minh kept shouting encouragement from his own boat. At Sung Sot Cave (“Amazing Cave,” he said, which sounded cheesy until you actually walk inside), it was cool and echoey, full of weird rock shapes and little pools reflecting light. There were crowds but somehow it didn’t matter; everyone just went quiet looking at the ceiling. Then Ti Top Island—steep climb up stone steps (I needed two breaks), but at the top you get this wild view over all those green islands scattered below. Didn’t expect to feel so small up there.
On the way back the sun started dropping behind the cliffs and someone put on music—old Vietnamese pop songs crackling through a speaker. We had fruit and tea on deck while drifting past fishing boats heading home. It was quieter than I expected; you could hear water lapping against the hull. Back at Tuan Chau Marina by evening, then another sleepy ride to Hanoi Old Quarter. Still feel a bit like I’m floating.
