The experience

You check in at Tuan Chau Marina in the late morning and board a cruise that spends the day moving through Halong Bay's limestone islands. The boat follows Route 2, which means fewer tour groups and a quieter atmosphere even when the bay is busy. As the boat moves through the water, you see the large and small islands that make up the UNESCO site, and the guide points out what lies ahead.

The day splits between water-based exploration and time on land. You visit Titop Island, where you can swim in the bay or climb to the summit for panoramic views of the karsts around you. Then comes Halong Surprise Cave, the most visually striking cave in the bay. You hike up and down to reach it. If you choose the kayaking option (paid separately), you paddle to Luon Cave and spend 30 to 40 minutes exploring it by water. If you prefer not to paddle, a sampan boat takes you instead. The guide is with you throughout and speaks English.

Lunch is a fresh seafood buffet served onboard with views across the bay. The day ends with a sunset party on the boat before the return to Hanoi. You'll need to arrange your own transport to Tuan Chau Marina or book one of the pickup options (a limousine bus, a VIP car for up to 10 people, or a shuttle bus from Hanoi) all departing early so you arrive in time for the late-morning check-in.
