The experience

The bus leaves Hanoi early and reaches Halong Bay by mid-morning. Once aboard, the first day moves through the central bay: you swim at Titop Beach, hike up to the viewpoint at the island's peak, and explore Sung Sot Cave. The boat anchors for the night, and the evening holds a cooking demonstration on deck, squid fishing off the rail, and a sunset party while the limestone walls darken around you. Breakfast comes at sunrise the next morning, watched from the sundeck.

Day two starts at the pearl farm, where you see how pearls are farmed and harvested in Halong waters. A process that takes years. Then you kayak out into the bay on your own, paddling between the karsts and into the smaller coves the larger boat cannot reach. Lunch happens while the boat cruises back toward the harbor, and you're back in Hanoi's Old Quarter by 4 p.m. The bus includes a halfway stop on the expressway back.
