The experience

How do you see eight centuries of Khorezm's military architecture in a single day without renting a car? A private sedan and driver handle the route through the desert, picking you up from your hotel and moving between seven fortresses spread across the Khorezm region. The audio guide (available in English, Spanish, Italian, French and two other languages) plays as you drive, so you learn the history of each site before you arrive. The vehicle is air-conditioned, which matters when you're traveling through open landscape for nine hours.

Each fortress tells a different story. Toprak Kala was a royal residence in the 2nd and 3rd centuries CE, later converted to an administrative center. Its walls still stand from that Kushan period. Janbas Kala has walls reaching up to 20 meters high with no towers on the outer walls: a design flaw the architects tried to fix with steeply angled loopholes for archers to defend the lower sections. Guldursun Kala, a fortified town from the 12th century, was abandoned around 1220 during the Mongol invasion. Excavations found pottery, bronze items and coins marking that final period of occupation. Ayaz Kala sits on a prominent hill and is actually three fortresses clustered together, built to defend against nomad raids and now surrounded by a shallow lake and yurt camps. Kizil Kala was built in the 1st to 4th centuries, abandoned, then rebuilt just before the Mongols arrived in the 12th and 13th centuries. Dumon Kala is composed of three sections: a western citadel with corner towers, a smaller citadel, and a northern enclosure, with the western side best preserved along its northern wall. Angka Kala rounds out the seven.

Between Toprak and Ayaz Kala sits Akchakul Lake, formed when the ancient Amudarya River changed course. The lake is named after an ancient Khorezmshahs queen, Akchahon, whose fortress once stood on its bank. Yurt camps and restaurants line the shore. In summer you can swim and take a sand bath. Local fish dishes are served at the lakeside restaurants. After the final fortress, the drive back to Khiva or Urgench takes about 90 minutes. Your driver can drop you at your hotel, the train station, or the airport in either city.
