Eight ziplines, two suspension bridges, two rappels down through the Green Mountains

A 2.5 to 3 hour zipline canopy tour at Smugglers' Notch Resort in Vermont where you operate eight ziplines, cross two suspension bridges, and rappel down from towering trees under expert guide instruction. All safety equipment is provided, and you'll complete ground school training before heading into the canopy. Children as young as 7 can participate when accompanied by an adult.

The experience

The tour runs 2.5 to 3 hours and centers on moving through the forest canopy under your own power. You'll zip across eight lines strung between hemlock, white birch, and sugar maple trees, cross two suspension bridges that span between the trunks, and rappel down twice from the top of the trees. The Green Mountains frame the whole day. An expert guide leads the group and teaches you everything you need to know during ground school before you clip into the first line: hand braking, weight distribution, how to read the cable. You pass ground school or you don't go on course. It's the gate everyone clears before the canopy starts.

What you bring is closed-toe shoes and clothes that fit the weather and the work. The operator provides all safety gear. You'll be climbing stairs, hiking uneven terrain, and using your arms and legs to move through the course, so the day asks for active participation, not a walk where you watch. The weight range is 70 to 250 pounds, and you'll be weighed at check-in. Anyone under 14 needs a participating adult companion who is at least 14 and at least 54 inches tall. One adult can supervise up to seven children on the same tour.

Bring a waiver completed before you arrive (or complete it on site). If you're pregnant, have a recent or ongoing injury, take blood thinners or anticoagulants, have a seizure disorder, or are on prescription medications that might affect your balance or judgment, check with your doctor first: the operator reserves the right to refuse participation for safety reasons. Snacks are available for purchase at the welcome center if you want something after.

Is this one for you?The tour demands active participation (hand braking on the ziplines, rappelling down trees, climbing stairs and hiking uneven terrain), so it suits people ready for a physical day in the forest, not a passive ride through it. Children from age 7 can join when accompanied by a participating adult.

Top questions

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Youth (7 to 17 years). Children under 7 can't be included in the booking.

Can I do this zipline tour if I've never zipped before?

Yes. The ground school teaches you everything before you head into the canopy: how to brake, how to position yourself on the line, how to read the cable. You must pass ground school to go on course, and the guide coaches you through it.

What's the difference between a zipline and a rappel on this tour?

On a zipline, you clip into the line and gravity pulls you across to the next platform while you control your speed by hand braking. On a rappel, you descend down the side of a tree using a rope and your own hand strength to lower yourself. This tour includes both.

How long does the whole experience take?

The tour runs 2.5 to 3 hours total, including ground school training and all eight ziplines, two suspension bridges, and two rappels.

Do I need to be in great shape to do this?

You need at least a moderate level of physical fitness. The day involves climbing stairs, hiking across uneven terrain, and using your arms to hand brake on the ziplines and control your descent on the rappels. You must be able to reach your arms above your head and place your hand on the cable.

What should I wear?

Closed-toe shoes are required: no crocs, slip-ons, or sling-backs. Wear clothing appropriate for the weather and the activity. Very short shorts are not recommended. All safety equipment is provided by the operator.
