The experience
How do you find wolves in Yellowstone without spending days searching on your own? This tour starts with an early morning drive to Lamar Valley, where the guide positions the group for the best chance to watch wolves and other wildlife. Yellowstone holds the largest concentration of mammals in the lower 48 states, 67 species in total, and the guide's knowledge of where they've been spotted that week shapes the route. The tour runs 7 to 8 hours, with the guide adjusting stops based on recent sightings. If wolves aren't in Lamar Valley that morning, the guide may head to another area or the Northern Yellowstone Range instead.
Spotting scopes, binoculars and a photographic adapter for phones mount to the scope so you can capture what you see. Walking sticks are provided for the stretches on foot. The guide brings early morning hot drinks and snacks before the wildlife viewing begins, then stops at Cooke City for lunch (either deli sandwiches or a picnic-style meal) partway through the day. Water and afternoon snacks follow. Door-to-door pickup happens within 10 miles of the Gardiner office, and NPS entry fees are already included in the price, so there's no separate park entrance to pay.
The return route passes Mammoth Hot Springs' thermal terraces, though timing depends on how the morning's wildlife watching unfolded. Private transportation means the group stays together in one vehicle, and the guide tailors the pace to the travelers in the group: families with small children, friends, or larger groups all fit the same itinerary.

Top questions
Where exactly is Lamar Valley and why do wolves gather there?
Lamar Valley is in the northern part of Yellowstone National Park, a wide open landscape where wolves hunt elk and bison. The valley's open terrain makes it easier to spot wildlife from a distance than in forested areas, which is why your guide heads there first in the early morning when animals are most active.
What if we don't see wolves on the tour?
Your guide adjusts the route based on where wolves and other wildlife have been spotted recently. If Lamar Valley isn't productive that morning, the guide may move to another area of northern Yellowstone or the Northern Yellowstone Range to maximize your chances of seeing animals.
Do I need to bring my own binoculars and camera gear?
Spotting scopes, binoculars, walking sticks and a photographic adapter for your phone are all provided. You can use the adapter to photograph through the scope, so you don't need to bring specialized equipment.
What's included in the lunch, and are there dietary options?
Lunch is either deli sandwiches or a picnic-style meal provided at Cooke City partway through the tour. Early morning hot drinks and snacks come before wildlife viewing begins, and water and afternoon snacks are included as well. Contact the operator about dietary needs when you book.
How does pickup work if I'm staying in Gardiner but don't have a car?
Door-to-door pickup is included for any location within 10 miles of the Gardiner office, so the guide collects you from your hotel or lodging and returns you there at the end of the day.
