The Experience

We met up right at Grant Marina—no crowds yet, just a few gulls making a racket and that chilly scent off the water. Our guide, Jamie, handed out splash gear and gave us a quick rundown (I fumbled with my life vest straps, which made her laugh). The kayaks looked sturdy enough for me to trust them, even though I’m not exactly outdoorsy. There was this hush as we pushed off—just the drip of paddles and distant steam hissing from somewhere across Yellowstone Lake.

Paddling along the shore was easier than I expected, but my arms still felt it after ten minutes. Jamie pointed out a bald eagle perched above us—she seemed to know every bird by its call. The sun started sinking behind the pines and suddenly the whole lake turned this weird silvery-blue. We glided toward West Thumb Geyser Basin; you could smell sulfur before you saw anything. Steam curled up from pools right by the shore—so close you could almost feel the warmth on your face if you drifted near enough (don’t try it, obviously).

There was a moment where everything went quiet except for some low bubbling from one of the geysers. I just sat there in my kayak watching light flicker on the water and thought: I didn’t expect to feel so small here. We stopped for snacks along a little pebbly beach—Jamie had packed something sweet (granola bars? can’t remember now) and told us about how Hayden Valley isn’t far if you want to see bison after your paddle. Someone tried to skip stones but mostly just splashed themselves.

The paddle back felt slower, maybe because nobody really wanted to leave yet. My hands smelled like lake water and faint smoke from somewhere across the bay. By the time we reached Grant Marina again, it was almost dark—just a few headlights blinking on in the parking lot and everyone quietly grinning at each other. I still think about that view over West Thumb when it’s quiet at home.
