2400 feet of climbing, two zip lines, and routes for every ability

Climb the Wind River Via Ferrata, one of the tallest in North America, near Thermopolis, Wyoming with a professional guide. The route features 800 feet of vertical gain, two zip lines, and beginner through advanced paths so climbers of all levels can participate. A guide provides all climbing and via ferrata equipment and teaches you to move safely on the rock.

The experience

The Wind River Via Ferrata sits on private land accessible only with a guide, which means you climb without crowds and with someone who knows every anchor, every pitch, and every transition on the route. You'll spend roughly four hours on the rock, moving through 2400 feet of total climbing with 800 feet of vertical gain. The route includes two zip lines built into the via ferrata itself: moments where you leave the rock and fly across the landscape before dropping back in to climb again. Routes split into beginner, intermediate, and advanced sections, so you choose the challenge that matches your fitness and experience.

A professional mountain guide handles the technical setup: they fit you with a helmet, harness, lanyard, and climbing shoes, then teach you how the via ferrata system works before you start. The guide stays with you throughout, managing safety and pacing while you focus on the climbing. If you want to extend the day, the guide can also take you sport climbing on nearby crags, where you'll work different terrain and movement styles. Children from age eight can participate, though the activity demands at least moderate fitness and is not suitable for anyone with spinal injuries or cardiovascular concerns.

Top questions

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Child (8 to 17 years). Children under 8 can't be included in the booking.

What is a via ferrata and how does it differ from rock climbing?

A via ferrata is a protected climbing route with fixed anchors, metal rungs, and cables bolted into the rock face. Unlike traditional rock climbing where you place your own protection, you stay clipped to the cable system the entire time, which makes the climbing more accessible while still requiring strength, balance, and focus. The Wind River Via Ferrata uses this system across 2400 feet of climbing.

Do I need climbing experience to do the Wind River Via Ferrata?

No. The route has beginner, intermediate, and advanced sections, so you can choose the path that matches your ability. Your guide will teach you how to use the equipment and move on the rock before you start climbing, and they stay with you throughout to manage pacing and safety.

What happens with the two zip lines on the route?

The zip lines are built into the via ferrata itself, so you'll encounter them as part of the climbing day. You clip into them, leave the rock, and zip across before dropping back onto the route to continue climbing. They're included in the experience and add a different kind of movement to the day.

How long does the climbing take and what's the physical demand?

Plan for roughly four hours on the rock. The route requires at least moderate physical fitness: you'll be climbing continuously with 800 feet of vertical gain, so you need decent cardiovascular health and core strength. The guide sets the pace and can adjust the route difficulty, but this is an active day on the rock, not a casual outing.
