The experience
Eight to ten hours means you start early to catch the light that works best for wildlife: dawn and dusk when bison, elk, wolves, and grizzly bears are most active. Lamar Valley, often called America's Serengeti, is where you'll spend much of the day learning to read animal behavior and predict movement for the shot. The guide teaches you to track and anticipate, not just wait. You'll also work in Hayden Valley, where the Yellowstone River and open meadows concentrate herds and bring predators within frame. The changing seasons shift what you photograph: spring and summer bring lush greens and active herds; fall turns the landscape gold; winter strips it down to snow and stark drama.
The instruction focuses on what separates a snapshot from a photograph. You'll master long-lens technique to capture detailed animal portraits from a safe distance, learn compositional framing that balances the subject with the landscape, and understand how light and timing create impact. The guide also covers ethical practice: how to photograph without disturbing the animals or the park. Private transportation takes you to carefully selected locations, and a weather and resource app helps you plan each moment. After the tour ends, you get a one-on-one post-processing session via Discord, where you review your images and refine them on the computer.
You'll need a DSLR or mirrorless camera with a telephoto lens of 400mm or longer, and basic knowledge of your camera's settings before you arrive. The guide is live and speaks English. Pickup is included. The national park entrance fee is not.
