White Salmon River Rafting: Class III rapids and riverside lunch
Glacial meltwater through lava tubes, Class III whitewater, and a canyon you walk around
White Salmon River rafting is a full-day activity on glacial meltwater flowing through collapsed lava tubes from Mt. Adams volcano, mixing Class III rapids with an optional Class IV waterfall and a riverside lunch. The day includes two separate stretches of whitewater separated by food and a walk around a large waterfall that requires climbing a steep wall with handrails. Children from age 10 are welcome; expert guides lead the orientation and the entire run.
The Experience
What makes the White Salmon different from other rivers in the region is the geology itself: glacial meltwater carving through collapsed lava tubes from an active volcano, and the river's designation as a National Wild and Scenic River. You start with a check-in and gear fitting—wetsuits, helmet, life jacket, splash top—then a river orientation from your guide so you know what to expect before you push off. The first stretch runs two hours through Class III rapids, with Husum Falls as an optional Class IV challenge if conditions allow and your group wants it.
After the first run, you pull ashore for a riverside lunch: burritos or burrito bowls with your choice of chicken, steak, or veggie, plus cheese, sour cream, and guacamole options, served with salsa verde and a spicy red option, sparkling or still water, soda, and corn chips. Then it's back on the water for another hour and a half descending into the Lower Canyon, where you explore the former reservoir and the removed dam site. A large waterfall requires all participants to walk around it by climbing a steep wall using handrails—this is the one constraint that matters: you need to be fully mobile and comfortable with that climb. The day ends with a mile of flatwater paddling, sometimes against the wind.

What are the Class III and Class IV rapids like on the White Salmon?
Class III rapids are the main event—whitewater that is exciting and technical but manageable for first-timers with guide instruction. Husum Falls is a Class IV waterfall option that depends on river conditions and group comfort; your guide will assess both before deciding whether to run it.
Do I need rafting experience to book this?
No. The White Salmon is described as perfect for first-timers, and your guide runs a full river orientation before you launch so you know what to expect and how to paddle.
Is there a walk involved, or is it all paddling?
There is one mandatory walk: around a large waterfall in the Lower Canyon section. All participants must climb a steep wall using handrails, so you need to be fully mobile. The rest of the day is paddling, with a mile of flatwater at the end.
What's included in the riverside lunch?
Lunch includes burritos or burrito bowls with your choice of chicken, steak, or veggie, plus optional cheese, sour cream, and guacamole; salsa verde and spicy red sauce; sparkling or still water; soda; and corn chips.
How long is the whole day on the river?
Six hours total: two hours of paddling in the Middle Canyon, a riverside lunch break, then another hour and a half in the Lower Canyon, plus the walk around the waterfall and a final mile of flatwater.
What age can children start rafting on the White Salmon?
Children are welcome from age 10. They wear the same gear as adults—wetsuits, helmet, life jacket, splash top—and paddle with the group under guide supervision.
