See whales and dolphin pods in their habitat while a naturalist explains what you're watching

A 2.5-hour whale-watching cruise departing from Newport Beach with an onboard naturalist guide who identifies California marine life as you search for blue, finback, grey, minke and humpback whales, plus over half a dozen dolphin species including giant Risso dolphins. The cruise operates year-round and includes a 15-minute harbor tour past Newport's mansions before heading to open ocean where marine protected parks sit just outside the bay.

The experience

The cruise starts with check-in at least an hour before departure, then a 15-minute passage through Newport Harbor where you'll see multi-million-dollar mansions lining the coastline. Once the vessel clears the bay and enters open ocean, the search for whales and dolphins begins. A naturalist onboard provides live commentary in English, identifying species as they appear: blue whales, finback whales, grey whales, minke whales, common dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, and white-sided dolphins are all possible sightings. Giant Risso dolphins, which can exceed 12 feet in length, sometimes appear in super pods numbering over 1,000 strong.

You can choose to watch from outside on the deck or stay inside the galley area, where beverages are available for purchase (cocktails, beer, wine, soda, water). The vessel operates in all weather conditions, so dress appropriately: no high heels are permitted. The cruise lasts approximately 2.5 hours total. Two options are available at checkout: the Standard Cruise uses the regular vessel, while the Luxury Cruise features a spacious yacht with a 360-degree walk-around deck, lower passenger count, and greater speed to reach more distant marine mammals.

Parking at Balboa Pier Municipal Lot is available but can be challenging, especially on weekends and during summer months. Arriving early helps. Public transportation options are nearby if you prefer not to drive. Outside alcohol, ice chests, coolers and glass containers are prohibited onboard.
