experience

What’s the experience like?

I almost missed our guide at the corner of 7th and D — there was a street musician playing something jazzy and I got distracted. But then there she was, holding a little sign and waving like we were old friends. That set the tone for this Smithsonian walking tour: casual, friendly, not stiff at all. We were a small group (thankfully), which made it easy to actually hear her stories instead of just facts. She started off with a quick story about how the whole Smithsonian thing began — I didn’t realize it was named after a British guy who never even visited America. Weird, right?

First stop was the National Museum of Natural History. The Hope Diamond is smaller than I expected but man, it glows under those lights. There’s this faint metallic smell near the fossil lab (maybe just my imagination), but it made me think about how old everything is in there. Our guide pointed out a T-Rex tooth — she let us know it wasn’t real, but still, holding it felt kind of wild. Some kid in our group asked if dinosaurs ever lived in DC; she laughed and said “not unless you count Congress.”

The best part for me was getting into the National Air and Space Museum without that massive line outside (the reserved entry is worth it). Inside, seeing the Wright Flyer up close — you can see where they patched up the fabric with what looks like tape — made me realize how fragile those first flights must’ve felt. The air smelled faintly of popcorn from somewhere (there’s always popcorn in American museums, isn’t there?). Our guide told us about astronauts eating peanut butter sandwiches in orbit; I can’t get that image out of my head now.

We finished at the Museum of American History, which honestly surprised me — I thought I’d be bored by presidential stuff but seeing Lincoln’s hat up close is weirdly moving. There’s something about seeing these objects behind glass that makes history feel less distant. By then my feet were tired (it’s almost two miles walking between everything), but I didn’t really mind. You end up talking to people as you walk — one woman in our group shared how her dad worked on Apollo missions and suddenly we were all swapping stories about family history and favorite museum snacks.
