The Experience

The first thing I remember is the hush — not silence exactly, but a softer version of DC. Our guide, Marcus, met us right outside our hotel (I was still fiddling with my helmet strap) and handed over these surprisingly comfy bikes. We set off toward the White House just as the last buses were rumbling away. The air felt cooler than I expected for July, kind of sweet with cut grass and distant food trucks closing up. Marcus pointed out a small detail on the gate that I’d never noticed before — something about the initials carved into the ironwork. He seemed to know every odd fact about this city.

Riding through Washington DC at night is nothing like daytime — you glide past the National World War II Memorial and there’s space to breathe, no crowds pressing in. At the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, we stopped without anyone around us. The black stone looked almost blue under the lights. I ran my hand along a name (felt cold, somehow heavier at night). Marcus gave us time to just stand there if we wanted — no rush. I didn’t expect to feel so much just being quiet together.

The Lincoln Memorial always looks huge in photos but it’s different when you roll up on a bike after dark. There was a couple sitting on the steps sharing fries from a paper bag; someone else playing soft jazz on their phone (not great speakers but it fit). We circled around to see Martin Luther King, Jr.’s memorial too — Marcus told us how new it was compared to everything else here, and why his gaze faces the horizon like that. Sometimes he’d pause mid-story if one of us had a question or just wanted to look longer at something.

I still think about that moment by the Tidal Basin — pedal coasting, water reflecting all those marble shapes back at us, not really talking much anymore.
